Total exports from Botswana for February 2016 decreased by 8.6% to 6.4 billion pula ($ 606 million) compared to 7 billion pula ($ 662 million) in the previous month. This decline was due to a decrease in the export of diamonds from the country, says the Statistical Office of Botswana.
Nevertheless, total exports in February increased compared with the same period last year by 20.9%, compared with 5.29 billion pula ($ 500 million).
According to the report, "Botswana Statistics on international trade and commodities (Botswana International Merchandise and Trade Statistics, BIMTS), the total volume of imports into the country during the reporting period was estimated at 5.85 billion pula ($ 554 million). The statistical Office of Botswana added that the increase was due to the high cost of diamond imports for the accumulation of stocks of products.
In 2011, the Botswana government has signed an agreement with De Beers, under which diamonds are mined out of Botswana are imported into the country, Mr. ie they are transferred to the store and then sold to sightholders.
Import of diamonds occurs mainly from Canada, Namibia and South Africa.
