Anglo American reported that the De Beers diamond mining increased by 8% to 7.4 million carats in the first quarter of this year compared with 6.9 million carats in the same period a year earlier.
The company said that the increase in production is a reflection of the commissioning of the mine Gacho Quay (Gahcho Kué) in Canada, as well as growth in response to the improvement in the terms of trade.
Gacho Quay reached the stage of commercial production at the beginning of last month, and thanks to this production in Canada has increased by 290% over the period and reached 600 000 carats against 162,000 carats during the same period last year.

Meanwhile, Anglo reported that the total De Beers diamond sales amounted to 14.1 million carats in the first quarter of this year as part of the three sites as compared to 8.1 million carats at two sites in the same period last year.

Anglo also said that the forecast for De Beers mining for 2017 remained unchanged and amounted to 31-33 million carats, while maintaining the current trading conditions.
